Accompaniment Program at Zurquí Criminal Youth Center (Jail)

Target Population:
Underage people who for various situations are in juvenile prison.

Duration of attention:
3 hours per week.

Specific objective
Provide support during their time in prison and alternatives to their criminal process when it is possible.

In 1994 we initiated contact with the Ministry of Justice and Peace (Grace) to follow up on children in the street who had conflicts with the law.

Currently we serve this population at the Criminal Youth Center Zurquí located in San Isidro de Heredia which is a juvenile detention center for the underage people of Costa Rica.

The objectives sought are:

  •  Sharing the gospel.
  •  Basic Christian discipleship to sentenced underage.
  •  Accompany them in their process of imprisonment.
  •  Share important dates: birthdays, Christmas, criminal proceedings, changes of sanction.
  •  Provide an opportunity for change of sanction in our Shelters – Household of Restoration Program when possible.
  •  Perform sporadic activities, such as: spiritual, recreational, and craft.
  •  Visit the population weekly.
  •  Support processes of awareness and public policy changes regarding the juvenile prison population.
